We have auction districts now. They're called Towns. But hey, I'd much rather have an auction house where I can list what I have for sale, and not spend my game time trying to sell stuff

Hit the nail on the head there.
People aren't going to spend ages in a "auction district", because MOST players will be in normal ones.
The only final solution is implementing auction houses linked throughout the world. Like in World of Warcraft only have them in major cities like Ascalon and Lion's Arch.
People seem to forget this is game is disigned to allow streaming updates, all the developers need to do is code, model and then slot the auction house, or NPC into the maps. We get the update, easy as pie.
And yes it would take a bit of time, but they are programmers, it would they paided to do, if it takes time will, it will. That's what programming is all about.

I disagree, I think buyers and sellers WOULD flock to auction districts, I think it would centralize trading in a select few areas, and would help alleviate the problem of trade spamming (local or not) in areas where people are LFG. I think if given the option, players would take advantage of such a district.
I know the core issue here is the ability to sell without having to physically BE at the keyboard doing it, but as I said that does take time, and I see this as a temporary solution not so much to the sellers, but the other people who just dont want to see all this trade spam in the normal districts.
Yeah streaming updates...but streaming updates dont create content, and it still stands that it would have to be created and thats no different from any game where dev's have to code and implement the changes. Delivering those changes to the players might be easy, but creating that content in the first place doesnt get any easier just because it can be streamlined to your customer base.

Ever seen the Bazaar in Everquest, auction district, works on the same ideal. Certainly a good, until implemented, place holder, I can see this as requiring little real work. I mean, you don't even need systems in place, call it an auction district, and people will go there, it is the simplest thing for us.
